China's Cadillac XT5 Gains Plug-In Power, Lidar and a Fresh Face

While American showrooms still sell the aging first-generation Cadillac XT5, buyers in China have had access to a completely different, second-generation crossover for two years now, built through the SAIC-GM joint venture. Until recently, that Chinese XT5 came only as a mild hybrid. Back in May, filings in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology database hinted at something bigger was coming: a proper plug-in hybrid variant. That car has now reached production readiness, arriving with a reworked exterior and a modern autonomous-driving suite alongside its new drivetrain.

Visually, the XT5 PHEV separates itself from the mild-hybrid version through redesigned bumpers, with the front unit gaining active shutters over its air intake to improve aerodynamics and cooling management. The grille now carries diode lighting, while the roof hosts a lidar unit tied to Momenta's R7 autonomous system, tuned specifically for this application in partnership with Cadillac's engineers. Around back, the exhaust tips have been tucked out of sight rather than left exposed, a small but telling styling cue that signals the shift toward electrification. Cadillac hasn't announced any changes to the cabin.

Under the skin, the all-wheel-drive PHEV pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 156 horsepower with a pair of electric motors — 217 horsepower up front and 150 horsepower at the rear. Combined output reaches 367 horsepower, giving this XT5 a considerable edge over the standard model. Cadillac hasn't released a 0-100 km/h time, but top speed is rated at 210 km/h. A 35.5 kWh battery pack enables up to 155 km of pure-electric range under the WLTC cycle, and the finished vehicle tips the scales at 2,170 kg.

For comparison, the mild-hybrid XT5 relies on a 2.0-liter turbo four making 237 horsepower, assisted by a 48-volt electrical system, and can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive. The jump to a full plug-in hybrid setup with dual motors represents a significant leap in both power and electric capability, positioning the PHEV as the performance and technology flagship of the XT5 lineup in China.

The shift matters because it shows how differently Cadillac's Chinese lineup is evolving compared to its home market, where the brand still leans on an outdated crossover platform. Adding a plug-in hybrid with serious horsepower and a locally developed autonomous driving system reflects the intensity of competition in China's new-energy vehicle segment, where even luxury nameplates must offer substantial electric range and cutting-edge driver-assistance tech to stay relevant.

Early production units of the Cadillac XT5 PHEV have already begun arriving at dealerships, suggesting that full-scale sales could kick off any day now. Official pricing hasn't been revealed, but the standard XT5 currently starts at roughly 380,000 yuan in China, or about $56,300, giving a rough baseline for what the more powerful, tech-laden plug-in variant might eventually cost.
