Why BMW Built A Longer, More Pampering X5 Just For China

BMW quietly gave its China-only X5 a bigger back seat than the flagship X7, betting that local buyers care more about legroom than badge hierarchy.

Barely a month after unveiling the redesigned X5 to the world, BMW has already rolled out a version tailored specifically for Chinese customers, and the changes go well beyond a fresh grille or paint option. Both the combustion X5 and its electric sibling, the iX5, now come in stretched "L" variants exclusively for China, and the extra length is enough to make BMW's own hierarchy a little awkward.

The long-wheelbase treatment adds 5.1 inches (130 mm) to the wheelbase, bringing the total distance between the axles to 124.6 inches (3,165 mm). That figure actually surpasses the wheelbase of the X7, BMW's largest and most expensive SUV globally, which measures 122.2 inches (3,105 mm). In other words, buyers who prioritize rear-seat space over outright size or price might now find the mid-size X5 L a more sensible pick than stepping up to the flagship.

Interestingly, BMW didn't need to make the same door-handle compromise it applied to the long-wheelbase i3 and iX3 earlier this year. Those models swapped their pop-out handles for flap-style units to satisfy Chinese safety rules, but the X5 L and iX5 L retain the pillar-integrated tabs used worldwide, a solution similar to what Ford uses on the Mustang Mach-E.

The most consequential update, however, isn't about size or styling at all. BMW has equipped the Chinese X5 L and iX5 L with driver-assistance software developed by local tech firm Momenta, built around an end-to-end AI system trained specifically on Chinese roads and driving conditions. BMW describes it as offering "address-to-address" assistance. It skips the LiDAR hardware common on many domestic Chinese rivals, yet it's expected to outperform the driver-assist suite BMW sells in other markets.

Visually, the differences are subtle but deliberate. New graphics appear near the Hofmeister kink, wheel designs have been reworked, and the standard daytime running lights now run diagonally instead of forming the X-shape seen on global models, though the X-shaped lights remain available as an option. BMW's China team also inserted extra light strips between the DRLs and the kidney grille, and softened the front bumper's appearance slightly.

Inside, the long-wheelbase cars lean further into luxury than their international counterparts. Both the front passenger seat and rear bench have been redesigned, additional color schemes are available, and a fold-down screen in the second row supports 8K video streaming and gaming, essentially turning the back seat into a private cinema. BMW hasn't released powertrain specifications yet, but it has confirmed the iX5 L will manage more than 621 miles (1,000 km) of range on China's CLTC test cycle, an ambitious figure that underscores how seriously the brand is chasing local expectations.
