VW's New China-Only Sedan Undercuts Rivals With 2,000 KM Combined Range

Just days after unveiling the ID. Era 5X crossover, the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture has now shown its sedan sibling in full. The ID. Era 5S first surfaced in rumors back in May, but with pre-sales now open in China, Volkswagen has finally revealed the cabin, trim lineup, and pricing that buyers can expect.

The exterior design was never much of a mystery, having leaked well in advance. It follows VW's current design language with clean surfacing and restrained character lines. A light bar spans the full width of the nose, while the main headlamp units sit lower in the bumper. Flush door handles and a single strip taillight round out the look. Dimensionally, the ID. Era 5S sits squarely in the mid-size segment at 4,836 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,505 mm tall, riding on a 2,766 mm wheelbase with wheel options spanning 17 to 19 inches.

Inside, the sedan embraces the button-free minimalism that's become standard for the Chinese market. The dashboard pairs an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster with a much larger 15.6-inch infotainment tablet running an AI-based voice assistant. A two-tier center console houses cupholders and a dual wireless charging pad, while the gear selector has migrated onto the steering column. Buyers can option a panoramic roof, ventilated and massaging front seats, heating for all seating positions, a 360-degree camera system, and driver-assist tech that includes highway and urban autonomous driving modes - though notably without lidar.

Powering the sedan is a plug-in hybrid setup built around a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter VWH engine making 109 horsepower, paired with a 177-horsepower electric motor. A 19.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery delivers up to 160 km of pure electric range, and Volkswagen claims a combined range of roughly 2,000 km when the gas engine is factored in. At a curb weight of 1,655 kg, the hybrid sedan tops out at 165 km/h.

Pricing is where the ID. Era 5S really stands out: pre-order prices range from 120,000 to 150,000 yuan, or roughly $17,700 to $22,000. Early buyers are also being offered substantial discounts on top of that already aggressive starting point, making the sedan one of the more accessible plug-in hybrids in VW's current lineup.

For now, the ID. Era 5S remains a China-market exclusive, much like its ID. Era 5X crossover counterpart. Whether Volkswagen eventually adapts this platform or powertrain combination for other markets remains to be seen, but the pricing and range figures here suggest the brand is serious about competing directly with domestic Chinese PHEV rivals on their own turf.
