Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI brings the GTI badge into the electric era with 226 hp, front-wheel drive, a standard front differential lock and up to 424 km of WLTP range.


Volkswagen has finally brought the GTI name into the electric age. The new ID. Polo GTI is the first battery-powered model to wear the badge, arriving 50 years after the original Golf GTI helped define the idea of a usable everyday hot hatch.

Unlike many modern performance EVs, the ID. Polo GTI stays close to the traditional GTI formula. It is compact, front-wheel drive and designed around agility rather than extreme straight-line numbers. Its electric motor produces 226 hp and 290 Nm, enough for a 0–100 km/h time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h.

The key hardware is fitted as standard. Volkswagen gives the ID. Polo GTI an electronically controlled front differential lock, progressive steering and adaptive DCC sports suspension. Together, these systems are meant to give the car the same front-driven character that has defined GTI models since the 1970s, only with instant electric torque.

A new dedicated GTI driving profile changes the car’s behavior at the press of a steering-wheel button. It sharpens the motor response, steering and suspension, while the digital cockpit switches to its own color and graphics theme.

The ID. Polo GTI uses Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform and a 52 kWh net NMC battery. Provisional WLTP range is up to 424 km, while DC charging peaks at 105 kW. Thanks to a stable charging curve, a 10–80 percent charge takes around 24 minutes.

Visually, Volkswagen has kept the GTI cues familiar. The front end features the traditional red stripe, now combined with an illuminated VW badge, IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and a 3D GTI emblem. Lower down, the bumper gets a honeycomb air intake and red vertical elements inspired by motorsport towing loops.

The profile is clean and compact, with a C-pillar shape that deliberately recalls classic Volkswagen hatchbacks. At the rear, the ID. Polo GTI gets a split roof spoiler, red illuminated details in the taillight area and a black two-piece diffuser. Standard wheels are 19-inch alloys, with optional Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires developed specifically for the model.

The cabin follows the classic red-and-black GTI theme. There is red stitching on the sports steering wheel, doors and seats, plus a red center mark at the top of the steering wheel rim. The standard front sport seats use a modern reinterpretation of the famous GTI tartan fabric, and the GTI logo appears in the integrated headrests.

Volkswagen has also added some nostalgia to the digital interface. The 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit can show a retro display inspired by a late first-generation Golf, while the 12.9-inch infotainment screen can carry matching graphics, including music information styled like an old cassette.

Despite the performance focus, the ID. Polo GTI is more practical than the combustion Polo GTI. The electric layout gives passengers more room, while cargo volume rises to 441 liters. With the rear seats folded, capacity reaches 1,240 liters. The car can also tow up to 1.2 tonnes, and the detachable tow bar can carry a bike rack with two e-bikes.

Options include a 425-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 10 speakers, a panoramic sunroof and 12-way power front seats with pneumatic massage. Volkswagen will also offer Connected Travel Assist, which can use online data to recognize red traffic lights and brake the car to a stop within system limits.

The ID. Polo GTI made its world debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. German pre-sales are scheduled to begin this autumn, with pricing expected to start just under €39,000.
