Volkswagen ID. ERA 8X expands SAIC-Volkswagen’s new China-focused SUV family with a five-seat plug-in hybrid layout, up to 503 hp and more than 1,500 km of total range.

SAIC-Volkswagen is preparing another addition to its new ID. ERA family in China. After the larger ID. ERA 9X and the upcoming ID. ERA 5S sedan, the next model will be the ID. ERA 8X, a slightly smaller but still large plug-in hybrid SUV.

The name places it in China’s increasingly popular “8” class, a segment used by many local brands for sub-flagship SUVs. In Volkswagen’s case, the ID. ERA 8X sits below the 9X but keeps much of the same design language and technology.

The SUV has already appeared in China’s certification database, and SAIC-Volkswagen has released the first official images. Visually, the 8X looks very close to the flagship 9X. It has a closed front panel instead of a traditional grille, a thin LED daytime running light strip and vertical lighting elements in the bumper.

A lidar sensor is mounted above the windshield, while the rear features a slim full-width light bar. The main visible difference from the 9X is the door handle design: the 8X uses flush handles instead of pop-out units.

The ID. ERA 8X is still a large SUV, but it is smaller than the 9X. It measures 5,020 mm long, 1,997 mm wide and 1,750 mm tall, with a 2,970 mm wheelbase. By comparison, the ID. ERA 9X is 5,207 mm long and has a 3,070 mm wheelbase. The new model rides on 21-inch wheels with 255/45 tires.

Volkswagen has not shown the interior yet, but the ID. ERA 8X is confirmed as a strict five-seater. That gives it a different role from larger three-row SUVs and should make it more focused on rear-seat comfort and cargo space.

The powertrain follows China’s current trend toward long-range plug-in hybrids. Under the hood is a specially updated 1.5-liter EA211-ERV turbo engine producing 143 hp. It works as part of a hybrid system, while actual propulsion comes from a dual-motor electric all-wheel-drive setup with 503 hp.

The SUV weighs 2,590 kg and has a top speed of 200 km/h. Two battery options will be offered: 51.1 kWh and 65.2 kWh.

With the smaller battery, the ID. ERA 8X can travel up to 340 km on electric power, while total range exceeds 1,400 km. The larger battery increases EV range to 400 km and total range to more than 1,500 km.

Chassis hardware is also positioned as a major selling point. The SUV uses an active air suspension with dual-chamber air springs and DCC adaptive dampers. SAIC-Volkswagen says the model is being tuned to deliver the handling feel of a German flagship SUV.

The market launch date has not been confirmed yet, but certification documents and official images usually mean the debut is close. Pricing should sit below the ID. ERA 9X, which starts from around 330,000 yuan, or about $47,700.

For Volkswagen, the ID. ERA 8X is another sign of how different the Chinese market has become. Instead of a conventional global EV, it is a China-specific electrified SUV built around long electric range, lidar-based assistance, large dimensions and plug-in hybrid flexibility.
