Vision BMW Alpina Previews a New Grand Touring Future

BMW has offered the first clear look at what Alpina will become under full in-house control. The Vision BMW Alpina is a one-off concept created for the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, and it points toward a future where Alpina remains focused on grand touring rather than chasing the harsher, track-oriented character of BMW M.

That distinction matters. Alpina built its reputation on fast, refined long-distance cars — machines that were powerful, but also calm, comfortable and discreet. The new concept appears to protect that identity, presenting Alpina not as another performance badge, but as BMW’s more elegant and bespoke high-speed luxury line.

The Vision Alpina is a large four-seat grand tourer, measuring 5,199 mm in length. Its long hood, low stance and flowing coupe-like roofline give it a very different character from today’s crossover-heavy luxury market. It looks more like a modern interpretation of an old-school GT than a conventional electric-age design study.

Despite its closed-off reinterpretation of BMW’s kidney grille, the concept is not electric. BMW has placed a V8 under the hood, making a clear statement that the first new Alpina chapter will not abandon combustion power immediately. Technical details have not been released, but a production version would likely use a heavily reworked BMW V8, possibly based on the brand’s current twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter engine.

The design is deliberately restrained. BMW describes the concept as a car that rewards a “second read,” meaning its details are meant to reveal themselves gradually rather than shout for attention. The shark-nose front end, clean body surfacing, Art Deco-inspired lines and classic 20-spoke Alpina wheels all reference the brand’s heritage without turning the car into a retro exercise.

There are also subtle links to historic BMW models, including the 507, but the overall result is more about proportion and elegance than nostalgia. Compared with many recent BMW designs, the Vision Alpina feels unusually calm and disciplined.

Inside, the concept continues the same philosophy. The cabin is clean and modern, with Alpina-specific digital graphics, crystal controls and leather sourced from suppliers in the Alpine region. The layout is minimalist, but the materials and details are intended to give it a more crafted, luxury-focused atmosphere.

The most theatrical feature is in the rear: crystal glasses that rise automatically from the center console next to a glass water bottle. It is an extravagant detail, but one that fits Alpina’s traditional grand touring image better than another lap-time mode or carbon bucket seat.

Comfort remains central to the concept. BMW says Alpina’s long-standing idea — that a comfortable driver is a faster driver — continues here through a dedicated Comfort+ mode. It is designed to deliver a softer, more relaxed setup than a typical BMW performance car, reinforcing the idea that Alpina should remain distinct from M.

The first production BMW Alpina developed under BMW ownership is expected next year and will be based on the 7 Series. The Vision BMW Alpina suggests that the company understands what made the brand special: effortless performance, quiet confidence and long-distance refinement. The real test will be whether those values survive when Alpina becomes fully integrated into BMW’s corporate structure.
