Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Debuts in Japan as a More Compact Off-Roader

Toyota has expanded the Land Cruiser family in Japan with the launch of the new Land Cruiser FJ. The model joins the existing Land Cruiser 300, 70 and 250 series, giving the lineup a smaller and more approachable off-road vehicle.

The new FJ was developed around the idea of “Freedom & Joy”, which explains the name. Toyota wants the model to appeal to customers who like the Land Cruiser image and capability, but need something easier to drive and live with every day.

Although it is more compact than other Land Cruiser models, the FJ keeps the core ingredients of the nameplate. It uses a durable ladder-frame structure and is designed to deliver the reliability, durability and off-road performance traditionally associated with Land Cruiser vehicles.

Toyota says the shortened wheelbase improves maneuverability, especially away from paved roads. The FJ also focuses on wheel articulation, helping the tires stay in contact with the ground on rough terrain.

Power comes from a 2.7-liter gasoline engine paired with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission. Toyota has not positioned the FJ as a high-performance SUV, but rather as a dependable and easy-to-use off-roader suitable for both daily driving and outdoor use.

The design follows classic Land Cruiser thinking. The body has a square cabin shape to maximize interior space and cargo practicality, while the exterior includes playful details such as a dice-inspired motif. The compact proportions are meant to make the vehicle easier to place on narrow roads and trails.

Customization is also part of the concept. Toyota will offer accessories that allow owners to personalize the FJ depending on how they plan to use it, from everyday driving to recreational off-road trips.

Alongside the FJ, Toyota also previewed the Land Hopper, a small electric personal mobility vehicle planned for launch from spring 2027. It is designed to fit in a vehicle’s luggage area and let users continue exploring trails and unpaved paths after parking their Land Cruiser.

The Land Cruiser remains one of Toyota’s most important global nameplates, with around 12.4 million units sold across more than 190 countries and regions. With the new FJ, Toyota is trying to make that heritage accessible to a wider group of buyers while keeping the model’s off-road identity intact.
