A longer wheelbase, a real third row, and a six-seat cabin: Tesla's newest crossover quietly takes over duties from a discontinued icon.

Tesla just filled a gap in its US lineup that opened up the moment the Model X rolled off the line for the last time. The new Model Y L, built at Gigafactory Texas, lands as a stretched, six-seat version of the standard crossover, aimed squarely at families who wrote off the regular Model Y's cramped optional third row.

This isn't Tesla's first attempt at the formula. A Chinese-market Model Y L debuted back in August 2025, and the US version follows the same playbook while wearing familiar Model Y styling cues on a noticeably longer body. The numbers tell the real story. Tesla stretched the wheelbase by 5.9 inches to 119.7 inches overall, freeing up enough room for an honest three-row, six-passenger layout rather than the token jump seats found in the shorter car. Total length grows by 6.9 inches to 195.6 inches, thanks to both the extended wheelbase and a slightly longer rear overhang. Height climbs 1.7 inches to 65.7 inches, translating into extra headroom throughout the cabin.

Cargo space is the biggest beneficiary, swelling to 89 cubic feet at maximum capacity — a 15-cubic-foot jump over the regular Model Y. Tesla, notably, hasn't published a figure for cargo room with all six seats in use, which is the number most third-row buyers actually care about.

Beyond the added length, the Model Y L gets a reworked tailgate, a beefier rear spoiler, larger glass, and a new Cosmic Silver paint option to set it apart visually. For now the only way to get one is in AWD Premium Launch Series trim, which pairs 19- or 20-inch staggered wheels with adaptive dampers and a retuned suspension setup. Inside, buyers get a 16-inch center display, an 8-inch screen for rear passengers, and a 19-speaker sound system, along with heated and ventilated seats up front and in row two, plus heated, power-reclining third-row chairs.

The launch-run trim throws in puddle lights, suede dash trim, branded floor mats and sill plates, and unique badging to mark the special edition. Safety hasn't been ignored either — Tesla added extra window and beltline side airbags specifically for third-row occupants, on top of the brand's usual suite of blind-spot monitoring, camera-based driver assistance, Full Self-Driving Supervised, and the built-in Grok AI assistant. At $61,990 to start, the Model Y L positions itself as the practical, family-hauling answer the Model X can no longer provide.
