Sales of the Taycan have cratered, so Porsche's answer is to make its silent electric sedan pretend to shift like a combustion car eight times over.

Porsche moved just 16,339 Taycans last year, roughly a third of the 41,296 units it delivered back in 2021. That kind of slide would worry any automaker, and with the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door now nipping at its heels, Porsche needed the 2027 refresh to bring something buyers would actually notice from the driver's seat. Its answer is a feature called E-Shift, and it's easily the strangest, most talked-about addition to the car in years.

Here's the twist: the Taycan already has a genuine two-speed gearbox tucked into its rear axle. It's just been invisible to the driver, quietly swapping ratios on its own without ever asking for input. E-Shift doesn't touch that hardware. Instead, it layers eight entirely simulated gears on top, complete with a virtual rev limiter, gear-specific drag torque, and paddle shifters that let owners bang through ratios manually or leave it in an automatic mode that does the work for them.

Porsche isn't the one who dreamed this up, either. Hyundai got there first with the Ioniq 5 N, and the idea has since caught on at Mercedes and even Ferrari with the Luce. What sets the Taycan's take apart is that it's stacking fake software gears directly on top of a real, functioning transmission that keeps shifting behind the scenes regardless of what the eight virtual ratios are doing up front. Porsche claims the result feels "authentic," with reworked torque curves and an updated Electric Sport Sound system tuned to match the shifts.

Every Taycan variant can be equipped with E-Shift, but it only comes standard on the range-topping Turbo GT. Everywhere else, it's an options-list add-on, meaning Porsche is betting that its most devoted customers will pay to have their EV pretend to be less of one.

Beyond the theatrics, the 2027 update brings real technical upgrades. The base Taycan, Taycan 4, and Taycan 4S now come standard with the larger 105 kWh Performance Battery Plus, capable of 320 kW DC fast charging and paired with a new battery state-of-health readout. US-spec cars, aside from the Turbo GT with the Weissach package, also gain a NACS port on the passenger fender for Supercharger access, while the driver's side keeps its J1772 AC connector; a CCS adapter is included for good measure.

The cabin tech gets a workout too. Porsche Communication Management now runs on hardware Porsche says is up to five times more powerful, speeding up the infotainment system and giving it a cleaner, more minimalist interface with customizable widgets and a dedicated App Center for downloading Porsche and third-party apps. The AI voice assistant has also been sharpened, letting occupants ask follow-up questions without repeating the "Hey Porsche" wake phrase every time. A faster 25-watt wireless charging pad, fully over-the-air software updates, and 16 additional Paint to Sample colors (bringing the total to 153) round out the changes.

Pricing for the updated rear-wheel-drive Taycan starts at $111,900 before a $2,350 delivery charge. Porsche has opened order books now, with deliveries expected to begin this fall.
