Nissan's Sportiest Leaf Skips the Power Upgrade But Sharpens Everything Else

Nissan just introduced a Nismo version of its electric Leaf crossover in Japan, billing it as the range's performance halo. On paper, that should mean the works: more power, flashier tech, and bragging rights over every other Leaf trim. In practice, the changes are more about attitude and dynamics than raw output, and a few of the decisions behind this car are genuinely puzzling.

The exterior overhaul is the most obvious change. A pronounced front splitter with a "twin blade" design anchors the new look, finished with Arteria Magma red accents that repeat on the mirror caps and side cladding. Fresh 19-inch Enkei wheels, built to save weight, round out the profile, while a unique ducktail spoiler and a subtly reworked rear bumper with a red pinstripe give the tail some presence.

Oddly, that tail doesn't get the flashiest lights in the lineup. Instead of the 3D holographic LED taillights with Z-inspired graphics found on the Platinum+ and Autech trims, the Nismo makes do with the smaller units borrowed from the base Leaf. For a car meant to sit at the top of the range and command the highest price, wearing the cheapest lighting setup in the family is a strange miss.

Inside, the changes lean more convincing. Nismo badging, contrast stitching, custom digital gauge graphics, matte suede trim, and synthetic leather upholstery give the cabin a proper sporty feel, and buyers can option power-adjustable Recaro seats. Four exterior colors plus two-tone finishes with a black roof are available, all paired with a black-and-red interior theme.

The elephant in the room is power, or rather the lack of any increase. Nissan simply carried over the standard Leaf's electric powertrains untouched. The entry B5 Nismo pairs a 53 kWh battery with a 174 hp motor, while the top B7 Nismo gets a 75 kWh pack and 214 hp. Both remain front-wheel drive only, with the 4ORCE all-wheel-drive system reserved for the pricier Ariya Nismo. So the bodykit and spoiler promise a performance edge the drivetrain simply doesn't deliver.

Where the Nismo treatment actually earns its keep is underneath. Engineers fitted a bespoke Nismo drive mode for quicker throttle response and recalibrated paddle shifters for stronger regenerative braking. More significantly, the chassis gets real attention: new springs, anti-roll bars, swing-valve dampers, reinforced subframe bushings, and retuned steering, all riding on 235/45 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires. It's this handling package, not the numbers on a spec sheet, that gives the Nismo badge some credibility here.

Orders are now open in Japan, with the B5 starting at roughly $40,500 and the fully-loaded B7 with Recaro seats reaching about $44,400. Nissan hasn't said whether the Leaf Nismo will head to Europe or North America, but given the brand's push to grow its Nismo lineup globally, an expansion beyond Japan wouldn't be a surprise.
