Mercedes Ditches the V8 Growl for Seat-Shaking Trickery in the Electric CLA 45
AMG's new electric hot compact swaps pistons for motors, but leans on vibrating seats and a fake exhaust note to keep the theater alive.
Mercedes-AMG rolled out the production-ready CLA 45 4MATIC+ at Goodwood, and it marks a genuine turning point for the brand's most aggressive compact nameplate. Gone is the screaming turbocharged four-cylinder that defined the 45 badge for over a decade, replaced entirely by a trio of electric motors. It's a shift that changes not just how the car goes, but how AMG has to fake the experience buyers expect from a car wearing this badge.
Both the sedan and shooting brake body styles get one axial flux motor up front paired with two more out back, giving the CLA 45 all-wheel drive and a combined 671 horsepower (500 kW) along with 1,297 lb-ft of torque. That's enough for a 2.7-second 0-62 mph run with a foot of rollout, or a flat three seconds measured the conventional way. Top speed lands at 155 mph, stretching to 168 mph with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package.

A 94 kWh battery pack sits beneath the floor, delivering a WLTP-rated range beyond 416 miles in the sedan and just over 398 miles in the shooting brake, which trades a bit of range for an extra 2.1 cubic feet of cargo room. Charging is handled by a 330 kW DC fast charger capable of a 10-80% top-up in around 22 minutes, or a quick 10-minute splash good for more than 168 miles of range when you're in a hurry.
Where things get genuinely interesting is under the skin. The tri-motor setup allows for variable torque split between the axles and active torque vectoring across the rear wheels, letting the CLA 45 shuffle power in real time depending on driving conditions. That's backed by AMG Ride Control adaptive suspension with three-way damping and six distinct AMG Dynamic Select modes that retune everything from steering feel to stability control and regen braking.

The strangest addition, though, is the AMGForce S+ mode, which tries to recreate the sensations of a combustion AMG through digital trickery. Active seat shakers simulate gear shifts, a digitally reconstructed soundtrack mimics the old 2.0-liter turbo four, and the system even throws in scripted "traction shift interruptions" to sell the illusion. It's a strange, almost theatrical way to keep the drama alive now that there's no engine left to make any noise of its own.
Stopping duties fall to a serious brake package featuring six-piston front calipers biting 15.4-inch discs, with single-piston rear calipers and 13.8-inch rotors, plus five levels of regenerative braking to blend in. Visually, the enclosed Panamericana grille looks sharp, though the lower front fascia's fake intake filled with plastic trim feels like a step down for a car at this price point and performance level.

Ultimately, the 2027 CLA 45 4MATIC+ proves AMG can still build something genuinely quick and technically clever without a drop of gasoline, even if the seat-shaking, sound-faking party trick shows just how hard the brand is working to convince buyers that electrification hasn't stolen the fun.
