A face freshened by radar sensors and a bigger badge shows how far kei-car safety tech has come, even on Japan's smallest crossover.


Mazda just gave its smallest crossover a once-over in Japan, and while the changes look minor on paper, they close a real gap that had left the Flair Crossover trailing its rivals when it came to driver assistance tech. If the name doesn't ring a bell, that's because this pint-sized machine never leaves Japanese shores, existing as Mazda's rebadged version of the Suzuki Hustler. Since Suzuki pushed a nearly identical update through not long ago, it makes sense the two kei siblings are once again in lockstep.

To put the size into perspective, the Flair Crossover stretches just 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) long, which is a full 520 mm shorter than a Mazda MX-5 Miata. Add in a width of 1,475 mm (58.1 inches), a height of 1,680 mm (66.1 inches), and a 2,460 mm wheelbase, and you've got dimensions dictated entirely by Japan's strict kei car regulations rather than anyone's design whims.

Up front is where you'll notice the biggest cosmetic shift. The XG, XS, and XT trims now wear a noticeably larger grille and Mazda badge sandwiched between the familiar round headlights, plus a reworked bumper intake that stretches out toward the fog lights and fender trim. Meanwhile, the more rugged ZS and ZT versions—Mazda's answer to the Suzuki Hustler Tough Wild—keep their slimmer grille and unpainted, aluminum-look bumper inserts from the old model, though they do get a shrunken badge up front, likely to make room for the new radar hardware tucked behind it.

Color options got a refresh too, headlined by a new Woodland Khaki Metallic finish alongside fresh two-tone combos. Shoppers can spec either Woodland Khaki or Soft Beige with a brown roof on the XG, XS, and XT grades, or go with a black roof if they're leaning toward the tougher ZS and ZT trims.

The real story, though, is under the skin, since the cabin itself carries over largely unchanged while the safety suite gets a serious bump. Every Flair Crossover now comes standard with Suzuki's upgraded Dual Sensor Brake Support II, which combines a monocular camera with millimeter-wave radar for sharper detection of pedestrians and motorcyclists, even in the chaos of a busy intersection. Layered on top of that are low-speed forward braking, front parking sensors, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control complete with a stop-hold function for stop-and-go traffic jams.

Smaller conveniences round out the update, including power-folding mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, and USB-C charging ports scattered through the cabin. Every trim aside from the base XG also picks up a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen with built-in navigation as standard equipment.

Under the hood, nothing changes, and the Flair Crossover continues with its familiar mild-hybrid 660cc three-cylinder engines paired exclusively to a CVT, sending power to either the front or all four wheels. Buyers can choose between a naturally aspirated version making 48 hp or a turbocharged variant that taps out at the kei-mandated ceiling of 63 hp, proof that in this segment, the real innovation is happening in the safety systems rather than under the hood.
