Land Rover quietly signals the end of an era for its long-serving SUV, ditching the base four-cylinder for a punchier six while dressing up a special trim that has historically marked a model's final.

The current Land Rover Discovery has been around since late 2016, and while there's no confirmed successor in sight, the 2027 model year update reads like the automaker is quietly preparing to wave goodbye. The biggest clue isn't under the hood, though the powertrain news is significant too, it's the arrival of a new Landmark Edition, a nameplate Land Rover has historically reserved for send-off models.

Longtime followers of the brand will recognize the pattern. The Discovery II, LR3, and LR4 all received Landmark Editions shortly before being replaced, making this latest version feel less like a mid-cycle refresh and more like a curtain call. Interestingly, Land Rover already applied the same treatment to the smaller Discovery Sport back in 2025, and that model is still very much on sale, so the Landmark badge isn't necessarily a guaranteed death sentence, but the pattern is hard to ignore.

Beyond the symbolism, this special edition genuinely stands out. It slots between the S and Tempest trims and wears an exclusive Tasman Blue exterior color inspired by the Clearwater Blue hue from the original Discovery decades ago. Carpathian Grey skid plates and Graphite Atlas accents dress up the grille, fender vents, and badges, while 21-inch wheels get a fresh Dark Agate Grey finish. Step inside and puddle lights project a mountain graphic onto the pavement, a motif echoed on the sill plates and dark grey brushed aluminum trim, alongside Tech Velour door panels, a panoramic roof, and a center console fridge. Pricing starts at $70,800, and the trim comes loaded with air suspension, a contrasting black roof, a power liftgate, digital gauges, and a suite of driver aids.

The more consequential change, however, lands on the entry-level Discovery S, which now starts at $64,900. Land Rover has finally retired the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that long served as the base engine, replacing it with a turbocharged 3.0-liter Ingenium inline-six pumping out 355 horsepower. That upgrade trims the 0-60 mph sprint down to 6.2 seconds and lifts top speed to 130 mph, giving the entry model a noticeably stronger character than before.

At the top of the lineup, the Discovery Tempest picks up smaller tweaks for 2027, starting at $84,300. A new Borasco Grey paint option joins the palette, while inside buyers get refreshed upholstery along with massaging front seats that include a driver memory function, small but welcome touches for the flagship trim.

Whether this really is the last hurrah for the current-generation Discovery or simply another chapter in an unusually long production run, Land Rover has made sure the aging SUV goes out swinging with genuine performance gains rather than just cosmetic flourishes. For buyers eyeing a three-row luxury SUV, the six-cylinder upgrade alone makes the 2027 model worth a much closer look.
