Kia's newest Carnival variant borrows the Hi Limousine's raised roofline but skips the pricey extras, undercutting it by roughly $7,400 in Korea.

Kia is fleshing out its Korean-market Carnival lineup with a new variant called the High Roof, aimed at buyers who want the extra cabin space of the range-topping Hi Limousine but don't need every luxury feature that comes bundled with it. It's a smart middle-ground play, slotting between the standard Carnival and the flagship model while targeting large families and executive-transport operators who prioritize headroom over pampering.

The name says it all: the High Roof borrows the same roof extension found on the Hi Limousine, stacking an additional 270 mm (10.6 inches) onto the standard van's roofline. That pushes overall height to 2,055 mm, or just over 80 inches tall. The steel add-on is color-matched to the body, styled with aerodynamics in mind, finished with chrome trim, and integrates an LED brake light out back. Aside from that vertical stretch, the High Roof carries over the rest of the recently facelifted Carnival's styling and mechanicals.

Inside is where the extra height pays off. Taller ceiling clearance makes it noticeably easier for passengers to climb into the second and third rows, a genuine annoyance in conventional minivans that Kia has now solved with sheet metal. The cabin gets suede-wrapped pillars and headliner along with dedicated LED reading lamps for rear passengers, giving it a more premium feel than the price tag suggests.

Where the High Roof pulls back is in outright luxury content. Unlike the Hi Limousine, which offers a four-seat configuration for maximum executive comfort, the High Roof launches strictly as a nine-seater, with a seven-seat variant arriving later this year. Buyers won't find the Hi Limousine's 21.5-inch rear entertainment screen, its extended ambient lighting package, or the ventilated and massaging captain's chairs with built-in leg rests. Even so, standard equipment remains impressive for the segment: full-LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, eco-leather seating, Kia's curved digital cockpit display, heated seats and steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and a comprehensive driver-assistance suite all come standard on the base Noblesse trim. Step up to Signature and you gain nicer materials, memory settings for the driver's seat and mirrors, plus available Bose audio and a head-up display. Color choices are limited to Aurora Black Pearl or Snow White Pearl, both paired exclusively with a Cotton Beige interior.

Powertrain options mirror the rest of the Carnival range. A naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 delivers 290 horsepower through an eight-speed automatic, while a turbocharged 1.6-liter hybrid four-cylinder produces a combined 242 horsepower paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The real story here is value. Pricing for the Carnival High Roof starts at 52,110,000 KRW (about $34,600) for the V6 Noblesse and tops out at 60,210,000 KRW ($39,900) for the Hybrid Signature. Compare that to the Hi Limousine, which starts at 63,270,000 KRW ($42,000) and stretches all the way to 97,800,000 KRW ($64,900), and the savings become obvious — roughly $7,400 at the entry point for essentially the same commanding headroom.

Kia hasn't indicated any plans to bring the High Roof beyond Korea, and given how niche this configuration is, it will almost certainly remain a domestic-market offering. Still, it's a clever bit of lineup engineering, proving that you don't always need the priciest trim to get the feature that matters most.
