Underneath that gorgeous gated shifter, Ferrari's newest 12Cilindri variant is hiding an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox pretending to be old-school.

Ferrari finally caved to a decade of enthusiast whining, but not in the way anyone expected. The new 12Cilindri Manuale brings back three pedals and a proper gated shifter for the first time since the 599 GTB bowed out in 2012 - except Maranello didn't just resurrect an old mechanical gearbox and slap it into a modern chassis. Instead, engineers built something far stranger: a fully digital manual experience sitting on top of the standard car's dual-clutch transmission.

The illusion starts with the hardware. A polished six-speed gate crowned by a classic round aluminum knob dominates the center console, flanked by three pedals where the standard car only has two. Ferrari even reworked the cabin around the setup, adding a dedicated tunnel and adjusting ergonomics so the whole experience feels centered on rowing your own gears. Tailor Made touches separate it further from the regular 12Cilindri, including a laser-etched badge, pinstripes that nod to the 365 GTB4 Daytona, unique paint options, forged wheels, and cabin materials found nowhere else in the lineup.

Here's the twist: none of it is actually connected to anything mechanically. Ferrari calls the system Manuale By-Wire, and unlike the brand's legendary gated manuals of old, there's no physical link between the shifter, the clutch pedal, and the transmission itself. Push the clutch down and sensors translate that motion into an electronic signal sent straight to the transmission control unit. Move the lever through the gate and you're not selecting a gear directly - you're issuing a digital command. The entire mechanism tips the scales at just 5 kg, built from gas-nitrided steel where durability counts and aluminum everywhere else.

What makes this more than a gimmick is how convincingly Ferrari faked the feel. Engineers built a dedicated module packed with sensors and kinematic hardware designed to mimic the actual loads a driver would feel during synchronization and gear engagement in a real manual. Get sloppy with your clutch work and the car will let you know - Ferrari says a botched launch can produce a stutter or, if you really fumble it, an outright stall. It's a similar philosophy to Koenigsegg's Engage Shift System, which allows the same kind of self-inflicted embarrassment. The by-wire logic also blocks downshifts beyond what a real manual gearbox could physically handle, short of forcing a moneyshift and hoping for the best.

None of this exists in isolation from the standard 12Cilindri's eight-speed dual-clutch unit, which remains the actual gearbox doing the work underneath the theater. That relationship is exactly why Ferrari can still offer a fully automatic mode, letting owners flip the car from an engaged, three-pedal grand tourer back into a normal self-shifting cruiser whenever they'd rather not think about it. Whether purists will embrace a manual with no clutch cable is going to be a fight worth watching, but Ferrari clearly built the 12Cilindri Manuale for exactly that argument.
