Denza Z is heading to production as a 1,605 hp electric coupe and convertible, giving BYD’s premium brand a serious performance flagship.

Denza is preparing to turn its dramatic Z concept into a production model, and the first confirmed specifications show that BYD’s premium brand is aiming far above the usual grand tourer segment.

The electric sports car was first shown as a coupe prototype last year, followed by a convertible version this spring. Now the production model has been detailed in both closed-roof and open-top forms.

The coupe will come standard with a carbon-fiber roof, while buyers will be able to choose different wheel designs, brake caliper colors and an optional rear wing. The most aggressive version gets a much more developed aero package, including a sharper front bumper, additional air intakes, a large rear wing, a bigger diffuser and a two-tone body with a contrasting roof.

The standard coupe measures 4,780 mm long and 1,330 mm tall. With the performance body kit, those figures increase to 4,870 mm and 1,350 mm. The convertible is also 4,870 mm long. All versions share the same 1,990 mm width and 2,780 mm wheelbase. Wheel sizes will go up to 21 inches.

Denza has not yet shown the production coupe interior, but it is expected to closely follow the convertible. That means a four-seat cabin with a digital instrument cluster under a hood, a large central screen, physical buttons on the dashboard and console, and a substantial center tunnel with an open lower storage area.

The key number is power. The Denza Z uses a three-motor all-wheel-drive system: one 680 hp electric motor at the front and two rear motors rated at 462 hp each. Combined output reaches 1,605 hp, making it more powerful than the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra.

Acceleration figures have not been announced yet, but Denza lists a top speed of 300 km/h. The coupe has a curb weight of 2,240 kg, while the convertible weighs 2,290 kg.

The Z will also feature steer-by-wire, replacing the traditional mechanical steering connection with an electronic system. This should allow Denza to tune steering response more flexibly and support future advanced driving functions.

Pricing for China has not been revealed. However, Denza is already preparing the Z for an international audience: European sales will be previewed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which takes place from July 9 to 12.

For Denza, the Z is more than a halo coupe. It is a statement that BYD’s premium division wants to compete not only with luxury EVs, but also with the new wave of ultra-powerful Chinese electric performance cars.
