Toyota dresses up its compact crossover with off-road cues and a familiar badge treatment, but only Japanese buyers get to order one.

Toyota is marking six decades of the Corolla nameplate with a quiet but telling update to the Japanese-market Corolla Cross lineup. The headline act is a new special edition called the Z Adventure, which takes the compact SUV in a tougher, more rugged direction while paying tribute to the model's anniversary. It joins similar 60th-anniversary treatments already applied to the Corolla sedan and wagon as Toyota winds down the current generation's run.

What makes the Z Adventure stand out isn't just the styling additions — it's where Toyota borrowed inspiration from. Rather than sticking with the standard Japanese-spec face, engineers grafted on the front end from the US-market non-hybrid Corolla Cross, then modified it with unique black trim and a matching emblem. Add the optional Z Adventure Set, and buyers get bold white "TOYOTA" lettering stretched across the grille — a look lifted straight from the Land Cruiser playbook, something you wouldn't expect to see on Toyota's smallest crossover.

The rest of the exterior gets the adventure-ready treatment too, with faux-aluminum skid plates, fender badges marking the 60th anniversary, and matte gray six-spoke wheels measuring 17 inches. Buyers can choose from Urban Khaki, Platinum White Pearl Mica, Mud Bath, or Black Mica, all of which come paired with a contrasting black roof. Opting for the Z Adventure Set also adds a Meteor Coat finish to the cladding wrapped around the bumpers, side skirts, and fenders, reinforcing the tougher stance.

Step inside and the cabin swaps in a mix of synthetic leather and fabric upholstery finished in Mineral and black tones, stitched with contrasting thread. Smoke Silver Metallic accents show up on the steering wheel, shift knob, and dash trim, giving the special edition a distinct look without straying from the standard Corolla Cross's overall layout.

Toyota didn't stop at the anniversary model, either. The rest of the Japanese Corolla Cross range picks up meaningful safety and comfort upgrades, with the top HEV Z and HEV GR Sport trims now getting a heated steering wheel as standard equipment. Both also gain a broader suite of driver assistance tech, including Blind Spot Monitor, Safe Exit Assist, and a Panoramic View Monitor with a see-through underfloor view. Toyota's Advanced Park system, which leans on a Parking Support Brake to detect nearby objects, pedestrians, and cross-traffic, is now part of the package as well.

Mechanically, nothing has changed, and that's not a surprise for a model this deep into its cycle. Japanese buyers still choose exclusively from self-charging hybrid powertrains, with the front-wheel-drive setup pairing a 1.8-liter engine making 97 hp with a 94 hp electric motor. Go for the E-Four all-wheel-drive system, and a second electric motor at the rear adds another 40 hp to the mix.

Toyota has already opened ordering in Japan, with pricing starting at 3,613,500 yen (roughly $22,400) for the base FWD trim and topping out at 4,077,700 yen ($25,300) for the GR Sport. The 60th Anniversary Z Adventure, which comes exclusively with the E-Four system, is priced at 3,921,500 yen ($24,300), while adding the Z Adventure Set with its Land Cruiser-style grille lettering pushes the total to 4,218,500 yen ($26,100). For now, there's no word on whether this special edition will make its way beyond Japan.
