Cabin Revealed: Volkswagen's China-Only ID. Aura T6 Drops Physical Buttons for Twin Screens

Back in April, FAW-Volkswagen gave the world a first glimpse of the ID. Aura T6, but only from the outside. Now the joint venture has pulled back the curtain on the cabin and filled in the technical blanks, giving us a much clearer picture of what this China-exclusive electric crossover is actually about.

Built specifically for the Chinese market, the ID. Aura T6 is a mid-size, five-seat electric SUV measuring 4,811 mm long, 1,879 mm wide and 1,648 mm tall, riding on a 2,836 mm wheelbase. Volkswagen claims a respectable 0.245 drag coefficient, and buyers can choose between 19- and 20-inch wheels. The design blends European restraint with Chinese design flourishes: a closed-off nose with two-tier LED headlights, a strong shoulder line, flush door handles, and a single light bar at the rear that visually echoes the front daytime running lights. A chunky spoiler tops the tailgate, and six paint options are offered, including Snow and Pearl white, Lark grey, Mountain green, Smoky purple and Galaxy blue.

Perched above the windshield is a lidar unit tied to CoreDrive, an advanced autonomous driving system co-developed with Chinese tech firm Horizon Robotics. It runs on Horizon's Journey 6H chip, rated at 420 TOPS of processing power. Volkswagen says the system handles both city streets and highways confidently and includes automated parking.

Step inside and the change from the exterior teaser becomes obvious: this is a cabin built around screens, not buttons. Buyers can pick gray, beige or orange trim, but regardless of color, the dashboard is stripped of physical controls entirely. In their place sit a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 15.6-inch central tablet running built-in AI and support for third-party apps and services, plus a head-up display with a 25.8-inch effective image size. All of it runs on a MediaTek MT8676 chip delivering 20 TOPS.

Practicality hasn't been forgotten, though. The seats can be reconfigured to create a flat sleeping area, and the equipment list includes a panoramic sunroof with retractable shades, an 18-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system, wireless charging and fold-out tray tables on the front seatbacks. Cargo space totals 576 liters in the main trunk plus a 90-liter front storage compartment.

Underpinning the T6 is the CEA platform, developed jointly with Xpeng and built around 800-volt architecture. So far only one configuration has surfaced in certification filings: a single electric motor, likely rear-mounted, producing 231 horsepower, paired with an unspecified-capacity CATL lithium iron phosphate battery. Top speed is listed at 186 km/h, with a curb weight of 2,126 kg.

Blind pre-orders have already opened in China, complete with early-bird incentives for the most eager buyers, though pricing remains under wraps. A full market launch appears to be on the horizon, but Volkswagen hasn't committed to an exact date just yet.
