BYD's New Flagship Sedan Dwarfs The S-Class And Offers A Choice: Massive Range Or A Gas Backup

BYD has just introduced its new flagship sedan, the Da Han, and it's a genuinely massive car. Previously teased under the name Great Han, this four-door slots above the existing Han model in BYD's Dynasty lineup and immediately makes a statement with its sheer size and the sheer variety of powertrains on offer.

Numbers-wise, the Da Han stretches 207 inches long, 78.7 inches wide, and 59.4 inches tall, sitting on a 123.2-inch wheelbase. For context, that makes it longer and roomier underneath than a standard Mercedes S-Class, which measures 203.9 inches overall on a 122.2-inch wheelbase. It's a bold move for BYD to position a car this large as a mainstream flagship, but the brand clearly wants buyers cross-shopping it against traditional luxury sedans.

Design-wise, the first photos show the Da Han finished in a deep green that highlights its slippery bodywork. Up front, slim LED headlights taper into a light bar above a blacked-out lower grille, while the side profile benefits from silver roof rails and black B-pillars that visually merge with the window glass for a cleaner, more seamless look.

What really sets the Da Han apart, though, is what's under the skin. Buyers get a choice between a fully electric version and a plug-in hybrid, a decision clearly aimed at maximizing appeal across different types of shoppers. The EV variants all share a hefty 102 kWh battery pack that reportedly weighs around 1,600 lbs on its own. In its entry-level form, this pack powers a single rear motor producing 496 hp, with claimed range figures of either 603 miles or 626 miles depending on configuration.

Step up to the all-wheel-drive variant and BYD adds a front motor to the mix, pushing combined output to a serious 764 hp while retaining the same battery. That extra performance does eat into range somewhat, with AWD versions rated between 509 and 547 miles depending on trim. Those are huge figures either way, though it's worth remembering that China's CLTC testing cycle tends to be considerably more generous than real-world conditions, so expect these numbers to shrink once the car hits actual roads.

For those less interested in going all-electric, the plug-in hybrid variant pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with a 54.4 kWh battery and a single motor, delivering a combined 422 hp. Its electric-only range checks in at a still-solid 292 miles, giving buyers meaningful EV capability without fully committing to a battery-electric powertrain.

Ultimately, the Da Han shows how differently the electric and hybrid game is being played in China compared to elsewhere. Rather than betting everything on one drivetrain, BYD is giving customers a genuine choice between extreme electric range and a more familiar hybrid setup, all wrapped in a body that outsizes some of Europe's most prestigious luxury sedans.
