BYD Shrinks the Denza Z9 Sedan Into a Shorter, Faster Z9S

BYD's premium Denza brand keeps expanding its Z9 lineup, and the newest addition trims the fat rather than adding it. After launching the Z9 GT hatchback in spring 2024 and following it up with the Z9 sedan that fall, plus a hatch refresh earlier this year, the automaker has now pulled the wrapping off the Z9S a tauter, quicker take on the four-door.

The name change signals more than a trim update. Official images released by BYD, backed by specifications logged with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, confirm the Z9S rides on a wheelbase shortened by 100mm compared to its siblings. Overall length drops by 130 to 145mm depending on which variant you compare it against, width narrows by 10mm, and height falls by 10 to 28mm. The car still wears familiar Z9 family styling, but the front fascia gets narrower headlight clusters finished with slim double LED strips, while the low and high beams sit on either side of a two-piece spoiler integrated into the bumper. BYD's press photos show the car finished in a new Dawn Purple shade, riding on 20-inch wheels.

Power comes exclusively from electric motors, and buyers will get a genuine choice between restraint and excess. The entry setup uses a single rear-mounted motor producing 503 horsepower, enough to push the 2397kg sedan to a 250 km/h top speed. Paired with a 102.3 kWh battery, that version is rated for up to 920 km of range under China's CLTC cycle.

Step up to the tri-motor all-wheel-drive flagship and the numbers get dramatic: a 367-horsepower front motor joins a pair of rear units making a combined 843 horsepower, for a system total of 1210 horsepower. That's enough to carry the heavier 2588kg car to 270 km/h. The tradeoff for all that extra hardware is range the same 102.3 kWh pack only stretches to 780 km in this configuration, a meaningful drop caused by the added weight.

Why shrink a sedan that's already selling well? Positioning it as the sportier alternative in the range gives Denza a way to chase performance-focused buyers without touching the standard Z9's family-friendly proportions. It's a familiar playbook offer the practical version and the sharper one side by side but the scale of the powertrain gap between the two Z9S variants is unusually wide for what's supposedly one nameplate.

BYD hasn't confirmed pricing yet, though full details are expected closer to the car's on-sale date later this year. For context, the standard Denza Z9 currently starts around 334,800 yuan and tops out near 414,800 yuan in China, roughly $49,400 to $61,200. Given the Z9S adds performance hardware and a bespoke chassis, expect its pricing to land at or above that range once BYD finalizes the lineup.
