BYD Dolphin G DM-i targets Europe’s supermini class with plug-in hybrid tech, compact dimensions and a claimed total range of over 1,000 km.

BYD is preparing to enter Europe’s supermini market with the Dolphin G DM-i, a compact hatchback that takes a different route from most of its rivals. Instead of relying on a mild-hybrid system, a conventional hybrid setup or a fully electric drivetrain, the new model uses BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology.

That makes the Dolphin G DM-i unusual in the B-segment. Many small European hatchbacks now offer some form of electrification, but very few provide meaningful electric-only driving together with long-distance petrol backup. BYD claims the car can cover more than 1,000 km on a full tank and battery charge combined.

The Dolphin G DM-i measures 4,160 mm in length, placing it close to the Volkswagen Polo and other European superminis. Importantly, BYD says the model was developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe, rather than being a simple adaptation of an existing Chinese-market car.

Full technical specifications have not been released yet. However, the car is expected to use a version of BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i system, with a petrol engine working mainly as a generator while the electric motor handles much of the driving. At higher speeds, the engine may also be able to drive the front wheels directly for better efficiency.

The setup could be related to the system used in the BYD Atto 2 DM-i. That model combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor and offers system outputs from around 162 to 209 hp, depending on version. Its electric-only range varies from 40 to 90 km, depending on battery size.

BYD has not confirmed the Dolphin G DM-i’s EV range yet, but the company is presenting it as a car that can handle daily commuting mostly on electric power while avoiding the range anxiety of a full EV.

Pricing is also still under wraps. If BYD follows its usual strategy, the Dolphin G DM-i could undercut established hybrid rivals such as the Honda Jazz e:HEV, while offering the added advantage of plug-in capability.

European sales are expected to begin in the coming weeks, with deliveries planned for later this year. For BYD, the Dolphin G DM-i could become an important entry point into one of Europe’s most competitive small-car segments.
