BMW M2 gets M xDrive for the first time, bringing quicker acceleration, rear-biased all-wheel drive and new BMW M Ignite engine technology.

BMW is expanding the M2 lineup with a new M xDrive version, giving the compact high-performance coupe all-wheel drive for the first time. The model keeps the familiar character of the M2 but adds stronger traction, quicker acceleration and more stability in poor weather or on track.

Power still comes from BMW M’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six, producing 480 hp. The engine is paired as standard with an M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, while power is distributed through the M xDrive system and an Active M Differential at the rear axle.

The all-wheel-drive system remains rear-biased. In normal driving, the M2 sends power only to the rear wheels. The front axle is engaged only when the rear tires can no longer put all the power down. This gives the car the added grip of all-wheel drive without fully abandoning the rear-drive feel expected from an M model.

Drivers can also configure M xDrive through the M Setup menu. One of the available settings is a pure 2WD mode, which sends torque only to the rear wheels when DSC is switched off.

The extra traction improves straight-line performance. The BMW M2 with M xDrive accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, making it 0.3 seconds quicker than the rear-wheel-drive model. Using the one-foot rollout method, the figure drops to 3.4 seconds. The car reaches 200 km/h in 12.8 seconds, while top speed is limited to 250 km/h, or 285 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.

A major technical update is the new BMW M Ignite engine technology. This is a patented pre-chamber combustion system derived from racing development. BMW says it significantly reduces fuel consumption under high loads and will be introduced across all BMW M straight-six engines from mid-2026.

The M2 with M xDrive also gets model-specific chassis tuning. Standard equipment includes staggered M light-alloy wheels, measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear. Track tires are available as an option, while stopping power comes from M Compound brakes with six-piston front calipers.

BMW is also adding new personalization options. For the first time on an M2, customers can order BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue, one of six BMW Individual paint finishes offered alongside regular metallic and solid colors.

Production of the BMW M2 with M xDrive will begin in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico. Market launch is scheduled for late summer 2026, with the most important markets expected to be the United States, Germany and China.
