AMG Widens Its Electric Lineup With a Cheaper GT and a Teased Performance Crossover

Mercedes-AMG has pulled back the curtain on two fresh additions to its electrified performance range, and together they signal a broader push to make the brand's high-voltage tech accessible to more buyers while also stretching it into new body styles.

The first arrival is the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe, a twin-motor, all-wheel-drive entry point that sits beneath the previously revealed tri-motor GT 55 and GT 63. Where those flagship versions rely on three electric motors, the GT 53 makes do with two, producing 544 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. That's still enough for a 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds, with top speed capped at 230 km/h unless buyers tick the AMG Driver's Package box, which raises the ceiling to 250 km/h. By comparison, the GT 55 (816 hp, 1,800 Nm) and GT 63 (1,169 hp, 2,000 Nm) hit triple digits in 2.5 and 2.1 seconds respectively, topping out at 300 km/h.

Despite being the junior model, the GT 53 actually claims the longest range in the family. It shares the same 106 kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum battery pack as its siblings, but thanks to lower power draw it manages up to 809 km on the WLTP cycle, edging out the 700 km and 696 km figures posted by the GT 55 and GT 63. All three cars support charging speeds up to 600 kW, letting the battery climb from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 11 minutes. Ten minutes on a fast charger adds about 500 km of range to the GT 53, compared to 460 km for the tri-motor versions.

Beyond the powertrain, the GT 53 keeps the hardware that makes the pricier models feel special, including the AMG Active Ride Control air suspension with semi-active hydraulic roll control and rear-axle steering. It also retains AMG Force S+, the software trickery that fakes gear shifts and engine noise for an EV. Here's the catch: the GT 53 pipes in the note of AMG's turbocharged inline-six rather than the snarling V8 soundtrack borrowed from the GT R supercar that the three-motor variants get to use. Still, the trade-off comes with a real financial upside, as the GT 53 starts at 115,400 euros, well under the 154,700 euros asked for the GT 55 and the 196,400 euros for the range-topping GT 63. Deliveries of the new base model begin before the week is out.

AMG's second reveal points toward where the brand is headed next: an electric crossover currently going by the placeholder name GT SUV. Shrouded in fabric for its teaser shots, the silhouette still gives away a front end with the three-pointed light signature seen on the GT 4-Door Coupe, though the rear switches to a pair of round taillights instead of the sedan's six. A prominent oval shape hinting at a faux grille further ties the design language to its lower-slung sibling.

Underneath, the crossover shares the 800-volt AMG.EA architecture with the GT liftback, along with the same axial-flux motors supplied by British specialist Yasa. AMG says a tri-motor variant could produce as much as 1,360 horsepower, with rumors of an even hotter 1,500 hp derivative down the line. The battery pack also appears to carry over, delivering a claimed 460 km of range and the ability to add 400 km of driving distance in just five minutes of charging. Like the sedan, the SUV will offer the AMG Force S+ soundscape modeled on the GT R's V8. A full reveal could land before the year is out, with sales expected to begin in 2025.
