Borgward

Borgward was a German automotive manufacturer founded by Carl F. W. Borgward in Bremen. The company produced vehicles under four brands: Borgward, Hansa, Goliath, and Lloyd. Notably, the Borgward Isabella, introduced in 1954, became one of Germany’s most popular premium models during the 1950s. Borgward was also a pioneer in adopting unibody construction in German production cars after World War II. Despite its innovations, Borgward faced financial difficulties and was forced into liquidation in 1961. Interestingly, after settling debts, the company had a surplus of 4.5 million Deutsche Marks, suggesting it was technically solvent. In 2008, Christian Borgward, the founder’s grandson, initiated a revival of the brand with Chinese investment. The company introduced the Borgward BX7, a compact luxury SUV, in 2015. However, the revival struggled in the competitive Chinese market, leading to bankruptcy proceedings in 2022 and liquidation by November 2024.
