AMC Gremlin
1970 - 19781 generations
The AMC Gremlin, launched in 1970, was American Motors' cheeky answer to the growing wave of imported subcompacts. Recognizable by its abruptly chopped-off Kammback tail, the Gremlin was built on a shortened Hornet platform, keeping costs low while offering surprisingly roomy seating. Power came from AMC's durable inline-six engines, with a thriftier four-cylinder added later for improved economy. Offered as a two-door hatchback with optional rear side windows that flipped open, it became a symbol of quirky 1970s American design. Affordable, easy to maintain, and distinctly different from anything else on the road, the Gremlin remains a beloved cult classic among collectors today.
